Curator’s Comments:
I find it especially interesting to consider the comparable formal qualities in this sculptural work with those in your painterly map pieces. The abrupt changes in directionality in the puzzle segments are synchronized with a broader sweeping gesture of the sculpture in its entirety. The enclosing shape suggests a frame or collar while the bottom edge is abruptly cut off to support the weight. I find a rough elegance to the asymmetry of the curved versus jagged edges, which appear to be choreographed at fairly random intervals. I also like that the various woods appear to have been left in their natural states or colors. The contrasts in value underscore the interlocking organization and inherent movement. There’s a poetic appreciation of collaboration with nature’s ultimate design.
