I would like to talk to you about including this piece in a show I am curating. I think this particular figure speaks with a certain haunting quality and could work.
Very beautiful! I think this is a quality of mystery in this one as well!
Curator’s Comment:
There’s very fine brushwork in these small portrait studies. I respect the idea of creating a painting a day, as a rhythm and continuity in the series is strongly detectable. Of the grouping, I particularly enjoy the elongated Black Coat because it’s less obviously sweet that the flowery en tondo portraits, but maintains an engaging softness. The dark mass of the figure’s hair plays against the umber garment and pink ground, making the figure appear simultaneously fleshy and taut. I also like the square formatted Pink Roses. While the inclusion of the flowers in her hair makes her decidedly more feminine, the sharp shape of her hair creates an unexpected edge, and a subtle ambiguity in her expression. She is tender, but tentative. Both works have an airy quality, as if the fleeting moment is only temporarily captured and held for the viewer.
