Curator’s Comments:
Passing Storm is a gripping landscape, in that it projects a nearly eerie quality into the cool blue terrain. Small bits of warmer brown and pinkish-orange hues offer a natural effect that pushes the customary boundaries of local color. Moving towards slight abstraction then, the irregularity of the undulating ground line lends instability to the otherwise restful horizontal plane. The swooping curves in the broken color palette add further counterbalance to the choppier strokes in the blustery sky. The two different kinds of painterly approaches between land and sky are at seeming odds with each other, but the slight visual disparity effectively sets up an unsettled space. I see raw unencumbered beauty in this place, but the painting also evokes the potential ravages of nature.
