Curator’s Comments:
My small painting Filet is a straight forward study of a familiar cut of meat, within a new series of other food based still life works. I’ve been thinking a lot about food consumption in the context of environmental stewardship and animal welfare- balancing our competing desires. The encaustic medium affords me a tactile and matte surface that I think lends itself to the subject, though I could also imagine these in glossy oil glazes. A friend said she saw the rough profile- of a cow within the striations of the meat, and of course now I can’t un-see it. I wonder if these works are too didactic in making the viewer contemplate meat-eating. Of course, another viewer could see the paintings as devoid of content all together, particularly if they’re not in the context of other animal-based works. Any feedback would be appreciated!
