Curator’s Comments:
I’m unsure if “Piet Revisited” alludes to Mondrian; it would seem to be a naturally analogous reference, considering the rectilinear demarcations of red rectangles. But this piece is also considerably more subtle than minimal, and enjoys variations in transparency and tinted opacity to create visual push and pull. The edge boundaries at first seem geometrically predetermined, but as the spatial shift starts to take place, the change in material offers other facets of interest. I like that the design also plays with the expectation of symmetry, throwing the viewer off by creating multiple layers of surface color. While in seemingly low relief, the painting ultimately takes on a sculptural appearance because of the breaks in exterior contours. I have no doubt that because of the large scale it has more of an architectural presence when viewing it in person. But even on screen, I appreciate the interplay between purity and solidity of form versus floating elements.
