Curator’s Comment:
Pink Game Drawing is a fascinating work, as it captures the dynamic nature and charm of a child’s game board, but the characters along the way span from faintly edgy to categorically subversive. The twisting of the articulated rainbow trail skillfully connects but compartmentalizes the individual units within the hot pink field. That the interior drawings are more or less black and white turns expectations around. The viewer is pulled into the intricacy of each drawing, making tenuous narrative associations and visual connections. I like that the path is only interrupted in two places, as it keeps the piece fluid and fast paced. After moving down to the bottom right I move backwards through the space, realizing there really isn’t an obvious beginning or end. The non-hierarchical scale of the floating heads, animals and vehicles is also pleasantly disorientating. I also really appreciate the aesthetic complexity of Fish Puppet Drawing. It also utilizes a vivid movement throughout the piece due to colorful formal repetition of related objects. More organic in nature, the large (puppet?) figure is both menacing and cavernous- assuming a container for the floating fish? The piece also puts the viewer on an uncomfortable edge, after pulling us in with strong color and accomplished drawing.
