Curator’s Comments:
Plessy Woods (2) lures the viewer into the interior of the landscape with lush green curtains of foliage on either side of its central axis. While the relieved bilateral compositional symmetry invites a certain visual calm into the space, the overarching gestural sensibility leans towards Neo-Expressionism. The broken choppy color is analogous in hue, but offers a bold, almost aggressive presence. There is also a strong interior/exterior contrast to the picture, as the unknown horizon pushes past the curtain of swirling line and texture. Stylistically the painting nicely bridges illustrative description and organic abstraction. While the first painting with the same enumerated title has a similar handling of subject and form, the slash of cool blue water cutting through the center of the work provides visual disruption. While the same verdant jade and emerald greens envelop the fantastical environment, for me the water breaks through the visual tension created by the small opening. This painting allows me to scan across the trees, rather than draws me into their fold.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
