Curator’s Comments:
I’m enamored with the large watercolor PokaDot Poem that appeared randomly on the site today. I remember admiring your still-life KA-Boom more than a year ago, but was happy to take a longer look at this lush cat! The close up cropping of the animal arguably gives her a more humanistic quality, with an almost fleshy handling of her features against a milky white background. The smooth surface of her face also divorces the subject from an immediate association with fur, which I think affirms the personification. The use of opaque white in a watercolor is unanticipated, but it’s highly effective and creates a sense of luminosity that extends beyond the “empty” white of the paper. The bands of subtle gray and warmer toned hues in the background, analogous to the subject, also provide clean boundaries. I’m not sure what’s happening in the blue-band that appears to be tugging at her mouth. But the action imbues the cat with a candid animation, rather than a straight-on expression. It’s a beautiful, fresh painting. I do hope you consider posting new work in this new year.
