This macro view of orchids stands out for me amongst your more idealized landscapes and religiously inspired paintings.  The spiritual figurative elements taken as a whole remind me conceptually if not technically of Thomas Cole’s mystical fairies among the woodlands of the Catskills.  But for what Orchids lacks in specificity, it gains in mystery.  The pinkish red centers of the flowers twist into what appear to be almost animate entities; apart from their whitish ground, but united by their organic abstraction. The spacing of the two dominant red centers also suggests a dialogue between them, while the other red pieces move off to the peripheries of the picture plane.  For me the square formal also adds another interesting dynamic, equalizing and yet challenging the viewers’ orientation to the already enigmatic subject.
