Curator’s Comments:
I’m fascinated by 134 Saville, which appears to capture the fleeting gesture and cropping of a photographic source, but has a very gestural sensibility. The architectural components in the background provide strong groundwork for the insertion of the female figure, which appears to be briefly passing through the picture plane. It also is curious that the numerical address bears a prominent role in the piece, in an acute visual clarity unexpected for its distance and placement in the otherwise hazy middle ground. It could be said that the painting has a voyeuristic quality, since the gaze of the subject is averted, but we seem to be witness to an outdoor public scene rather than the domestic interiors in some of your other works. Formally I quite enjoy the brushwork vacillating between warm and cool tones, and the change in brushwork directionality that sculpts the pictorial space.
