The line quality of Pregnant Form provides an interesting agitated movement to the body’s contour; dark patches of hatched lines focus on a contrapposto shift between the hip and opposing thigh. I also enjoy the manner in which the upward stretch of the gesture of the pose was captured. Thin lines and shadows along the breast and interior of the belly echo this vertical thrust. Looking through your other figure drawings on the site, this image has a cleaner presentation of the model. While the “static” marks in other drawings add mystery and set up an unusual, haptic figure-ground relationship, I also appreciate the attention to a smoother form with calligraphic edges and true negative space. The scale of this drawing isn’t noted in the original post, but I noticed others appear to be life sized. Please do consider sharing new images if you’re still on the site. I would love to see what is happening in your studio today.
