Curator’s Comment:
Beach Bum enjoys an instinctive diffusion of texture and color. While I don’t know that there’s a conceptual connection between the torn edges and color choice in the collages and the somewhat nostalgic subject matter, the result is a lively and quite captivatingly. The cluster of photographic material/figures in the center provide an anchor from which the blue and red travel throughout the piece. I particularly like the reemphasis on the black linear contours of the figures- they seem to be reasserted when swallowed up by the swirling brushstrokes, as in the arms of the figures on the far left, and alternately on the legs on the lower female figure. The similarly constructed piece entitled Jackson Hole (Ski Resort) also utilizes lost and found dissolution of form within a tactile and colorfully layered field. I like that the red sign shape serves as a grounded anchor in this piece, much in the same way the large black (umbrella?) shape functions in the other piece. They’re formally a wonderfully balance between restrained and delicate marks and more vigorous and confident applications of media.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
