Curator’s Comment:
I find Picket Fence to be an inviting formalist work. The repetition of like forms with subtle graduated changes in height provides rhythm within a clean uniformity. The sculpture looks as though it would emit sound, with carefully calibrated intervals of line and cylinders. I also like the way the rods meet their base- there aren’t extraneous textural elements, but there’s subtle punctuation at their point of contact. The companion work (206B) has similar compositional pieces, but with fewer brass cylinders arranged in a more homogenously distributed arc, the piece doesn’t seem to me as fluid or easily melodic. For similar reasons I also appreciate the works with longer linear elements- they bend and sway, moving out of plumb to form bowing and reaching curves into space.
