Curator’s Comments:
The relief sculpture Progression of an expression came up on the site today despite being created a number of years ago. There is a strange visceral pleasure in viewing the plastic nature of the twisted expressions arrested in cast bronze and steel. The linear presentation of the three mouths does give the viewer a sense of progression, and perhaps the formation of speech along with facial expressions. When I looked to contextualize this work among other pieces in your portfolio I was surprised to see your page dominated primarily by powerfully expressive two-dimensional paintings. While some of the abstract figurations contain stretched distortions, the colorful paintings actually share very little with the final communication of the sculptural work other than a dark, contrasting ground. I do find both approaches to be engaging and presenting vivid manipulation.
