Author Suzanne McLaine Rosenwasser also grew up in Manhasset LI. This image is my intrepretation of her photo. Fabric scraps are top stitch raw edge appliqued to a portion of a canvas shower curtain. This piece was a tough master,Ii worked and worked on it - would call it finished - but then in the studio next morning it would call for further adjusting, color, size and shape wise. Once finished I then allowed it to fade somewhat in the sun to soften the colors.

I enjoy the raw edges of torn fabric in Manhasset Bay, and how the bands of sky and ground are interrupted by a more carefully constructed landscape in the center.  The saturated cobalt hues in the buildings are beautifully reiterated in the blue cloud patches in the top of the piece.  The application appears rather gestural and organic. I also appreciate the atmospheric impact of the cooler blue-violet swaths “fading” into the background, creating a spatially receding middle and background. The grommets along the top of the work do not appear to be a fundamental part of the image, but more of a functional hanging device in this work. (I realized I had thought just the opposite of CARBON some time back, as the fasteners served as visual intervals or breaks in a graphically fashioned grid.) However, while I might consider the hardware non-essential to the viewing of the work, I do think it accentuates the object-oriented nature of textile-oriented painting.
