Curator’s Comments:

This Lost series has strong narrative components- most of which I interpret to include rather ominous dialogue between factory workers and the pressures of conformity.  I especially like this second painting in the series, which animates the factory building into a colossal living red heart, though detached from a larger body.  The empty space surrounding the figures is psychologically disengaging, and even somewhat disorientating visually in terms of a standard figure-ground relationship. Hierarchically the woman holding the clipboard/ipad possesses a position of authority over the small black minions.  She doesn’t appear to glean any pleasure from her elevated role, but is readily focused on the task at hand.  I’m also drawn to the sixth piece in the series, because of the ambiguity of the scene.  This time the girl with the braids and yellow shirt assumes a more subordinate role- physically smaller than her studied companion.  As a photographer she again wields some power over her subject, but the strange grouping in the line of black silhouetted “witnesses” to the action makes the scene appear more staged.  I enjoy the pure, universal expression in the clean edges of these works, and the direct engagement of figures in apprehensive encounters.
