Nocturne reemerged on the site through a recent random search, and I have enjoyed revisiting your expressive figural paintings. The strange dynamic between disparate figures and varying degrees of abstraction is evident and appreciated here. I question if the small cat figure on the left is a toy versus animated form; the human on the right underscores this ambiguity with his questioning assessment. The lighter outline around the cat further removes him from the landscape, but this formal treatment extends around the hand of his human companion. While the painting employs a loose gestural quality, it’s as if both figures are cut out and placed against a harmonizing backdrop. While the background shares some of the colors in the primary subjects, on closer inspection it demonstrates a thinner, brushier approach. These visual incongruities create an interesting visual tension in the work, and keep me coming back.
