Reclining Nude

I came across this mixed media print Reclining Nude quite by accident today, looking at random images on the site. The overlapping of fluid marks and strong figural contours sets up an interesting spatial dynamic. Only slightly echoing the diagonal trajectory of the lines, the reclining nude is interrupted at unexpected intervals.  The more graduated blend roll of fleshy pink ink softens the graphic qualities in the black lines, and also serves to animate the pose.  I also enjoy the breaks in some of the edges; at the shoulder, and in the denser values of the hair, opening up the forms and integrating the elements.  It’s interesting to note the change in mood in the related version on the immediate right. The wide blue green strokes and choppy red lines create more tension between the figure and ground, and is less at ease.  Please do consider adding more recent pieces- the mixed media monotypes are a wonderful mix of formal/academic line work and gestural expression.
