Curator’s Comment:

Red Fish Mask is an elegant collage, upholding the intrinsic quality of the materials- from papery organic texture to the more crisply printed graphics.  I like that the fish are upside-down, as it takes a moment for recognition, as the image literally floats and then swims in a circular movement.  The red-orange color and shapes appear to flow downward, and are caught in the small printed score and cherub pattern along the bottom edge.  The darker brownish shape, while alternating between biomorphic and amorphous edges, separates and creates a point of discord between the two printed areas.  I also especially enjoy the collage entitled Black Ellipses’, for its vacillation and flow between similarly graphic printed imagery and more ephemeral space.  The pure solid red in this later piece provides a visual breach and contrast from the modeled and complex hues present in other areas.  Its sharp banding creates a layer of tension rather than horizontal rest.  Both of these works strike arresting and visual juxtapositions where hard and soft edge meets.
