Curator’s Comments:
This Red Flower piece came up unexpectedly today as I was looking through the site, and I stopped to admire the burst of crimson in the swath of color opposed to the more reserved tones in the figure. The diagonals created in the pose and graphic background animate the model, just as the long dark cascade of her hair breaks these lines with a dramatic vertical element. I appreciate the starkness of the white ground, and restrained chiaroscuro in her light open garment. The warm yellow-orange coloration on the torso and leg suggests directional lighting, while the areas outside the contours of the figure contradict light and shadow patterns that would naturally ground her in space. It is a beautiful drawing; the subject matter is centered and prominent, but also is a pure vehicle for broader decisions about what drawing can be.
