Curator’s Comments:
The figures in this Red Light District series are intriguing in their distortion of the figures. The graphic value contrasts and saturated color play off of what the viewer would normally expect in bodily surface and figural pattern. The lack of facial depiction arguably moves the subjects away from specific individuals, and celebrates their corporal form. This particular piece, Red Light District III, positions the crouched model in an animalistic pose, so that the circular projections evoke leopard spots. I interpret this as relating to animalistic behaviors, primal desires, or transformation. Looking through your other pieces on the site I was reminded of your other body of work addressing the darker narrative of human trafficking. The beautifully visceral images merging body with meat are certainly more overt in the juxtaposition, while other pieces in the Journey series show more optimistic spiritual progress in subject and color palette. Taking in these different approaches together is an engrossing reflection on human yearning.
