Really nice piece.
Curator’s Comment:
The airiness of this piece shares the wonderful line quality as your figure drawings, though it moves into a realm of greater ambiguity and manipulation of form. The lines appear to be searching- floating in and out of the opaque field into various layers of transparence and representational detail. The smoky background appears to wash warm and cool hues together, with some accidental articulations and drip marks. It really is quite stunning. I also respond to the more defined but reserved still life of lilies and a bowl. (Rees 1) The textural ground keeps the white space from becoming too austere, but the spaciousness of the composition nicely plays against the rich tonalities of the flowers and shadows around the bowl. The slight angle of the stem also pushes the composition slightly off kilter- thus enhancing the flower’s vulnerability by its lack of stability and visual anchor. While there is a wide range in your subjects and degree of abstraction, each piece seems to capture a fleeting moment, along with the small irregularities that connect and animate the corporeal world.
