Curator’s Comments:
This apparently untitled figurative piece has a powerful emotive presence, tapping into archetypal images of bilateral symmetry, skeletal systems and growth. The ribbed structure emanating from the central (masculine proportioned) figure suggests buttressed supports, tree limbs and wings. Perfectly mirrored, there is still a peculiar quality to the cropping of the head at the top of the picture plane. It’s as if the absence of the head abbreviates the presence of the mind, or by default places prominence on the body incarnate. The scribbled texture within the empty silhouette appears to be handwriting, but I can’t make out the text. It nonetheless offers a personal, inward type of deliberation or suggestion of catharsis; unspoken and therefore hushed thoughts are directed inward just as the ribbed barbs splay out. The shifts in color and value also contribute to the supernatural quality. The figurative form contains light, contrasting the muddled darkness of deep blue and red tones behind or underneath. I enjoy viewing this piece alongside your more traditional figure drawings. The charcoal drawings alongside this piece employ broken contours or partially open boundaries; plausibly leaving space for other visual elements to enter into the narrative.
