Curator’s Comments:
Reflection is an intensely expressionistic piece; dark, and mysteriously foreboding. The bright light source of the setting sun along the horizon sharply contrasts with the blue-black land masses. (I was somewhat surprised to read you painted this piece on Plexiglass mirror, assuming the small white highlights were flatly painted, or the result of accidental photographic glare.) But I like the relieved symmetry of the two protruding islands, and the way the swath of orange reflection seems to rise up to meet similar colors in the sky. The patchy bits of broken color in the water also reflect the movements above, adding some compositional stability to an otherwise dramatic and almost theatrical space. The raw edginess of the space is poetic, sharing some of the vivid characteristics of your other paintings.
