Curator’s Comments:
This 2007 Self Portrait came up in a random search of similar images, and with longer viewing I have increased appreciation of the compositional subtly and spatial restraint. There appears to be tension through the slightly suspended animation- the body poised to the right of a large amount of open space is slightly leaning in. I also interpret intense focus in the figure’s gaze, though the viewer isn’t privy to what is in the line of sight. The warm hues and smoky shadows offer countered softness to the hard edged realism. Less visual emphasis is placed on environment or even in clothing details when compared to your other figurative pieces. In these ways the subject appears to be handed in small and different ways from the other portrait subjects. Perhaps there’s less adherence to photographic realism as you engage what is arguably the most familiar subject.
