Curator’s Comments:
Oppress has an incredible depth for such a limited range of colors and values. I enjoy the small breaks between the tendril like vines suggesting underwater creatures. I don’t know if you intended to specifically depict squid or octopi, or if the mind just wants to establish something concrete in the overlapping fluidity of shapes. The small circular bubble towards the bottom left of the piece forms a bit of a visual anchor if not a focal point because if it’s disparate value and shape. But the even smaller white dots pull me away from that area and keep me moving throughout the composition. The piece does have an overwhelming and repressive feel because of the consistent weight of color and densely occupied space; there’s really no visual rest or space to breathe. I find it interesting that most of the other imagery you have posted on the site explores dark and even macabre subject matter in a technically lighter tone.
