Curator’s Comment:
Welcome to the site! Your black and white photographs are exquisite- I find the lush surfaces in Water and Sand to be particularly striking. There’s an interesting abstraction that occurs in the distortion of the diverging value patterns in the landscape. The blackish sand appears almost metallic in its reflective undulations in the foreground and smooth gradation of light further up into the picture plane. I like the diagonal crisscrossing of these contrasting surfaces, which set up an unexpected visual dynamic in a subject that one is accustomed to viewing in a horizontal orientation. The hazy whites and smoky shadows in Coastal Surf also inject a romantic drama into the rocky waves. Again, the diagonal trajectory of the composition’s value pattern adds faint visual tension, while leading the viewer deeper into the space. It is a gorgeous study of light and texture, and significantly slows down the viewing.
