Curator’s Comment:
Your dual and formidable stylistic approaches seem to converge in this piece. Grand Bazaar has the solid painting of form and economized structure I see in many of your urban street scapes and interior environments. But it teeters towards the dissolution of non-objectivity with its richly patterning and broken daubs of color and light. The violet shadows resonate against the complementary ochre light- bringing pulsating warmth to the painting. And yet that the viewer can make out objects lining a street stall with passersby makes the piece human and engaging. The figures anchor the swirling dots and dashes, even as they dissolve against the right frame of the picture plane. Simit Stall also has this vibrant energy, and tension between abstraction and representation. The circular food items on the vendor’s cart nicely echo the more organic curvilinear forms throughout the piece. I see the opaque blue shapes as starling accents to the less saturated shades, making me aware of the elegant formal structure of the piece. While a lively subject matter remains animated by exceptionally fluid brushstrokes, the overriding subject of the piece for me seems to be color.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
