Curator’s Comment:

The broken, cubistic color work in this piece transforms reflective architectural surfaces into a wonderful abstract pattern of expressive color blocking. The tectonic relationships between rectilinear planes offers a dizzying view of a tightly packed urban space. Even within the underlying geometry of the composition, I appreciate the painterly marks within each square shape. The broad range of values beautifully sets up contrast between deep blue hues and what read as pale reflective sky blue tints. The organization of color is really masterful when considering the impressionistic shifts between the extreme warm and cool color palette. The large physical scale of the piece no doubt enhances the spatial qualities and illusion of depth. I also attribute some of the originality of the painting to the angle of the structure on the left side; it’s as if the building tilts back slightly to afford the viewer entry into the space.
