This Sea turtle painting attracted my attention because of the aqua blue hues in the water and undulating plant forms.  I was further interested to read the piece was based on a memory at sea, as it has a fantastical, dream like quality.  While the mosaic like compartmentalization of the turtle’s body and coral recall stained glass, the opaque black section on the lower right is a surprising break from the otherwise light and decorative design. To some degree, it anchors the subjects rather than allows them to float freely against the cerulean blue ground. The strong diagonal movement in the elements in the painting also suggests animated movement.  Perhaps this was a fleeting sight rather than a longer engagement with the beautiful creature.
