Curator’s Comment:
Summer materializes as a sultry landscape, pushing into color field abstraction. I find it very appealing that the highly saturated yellow hue rises up from along the bottom edge of the canvas and opens into a cooler airy space. The bluish white variations suggest cloud formation, and articulate light blended color mass. The horizontal orientation supports the awareness of a horizon, but the piece doesn’t capitulate to an overt rising or setting sun. The piece titled Searching, with its more seductive red field and vertical thrust moves even further away from landscape, but also exerts an interesting figure ground relationship, or axis mundi. I also see the slightly curved edges creating a feeling of envelopment of space, no doubt augmented by the large scale of the physical work, while the small pockets of blue-green seem faintly jewel like as they punctuate the surrounding amorphous shapes.
