Curator’s Comments:
At first glance Self Portrait for Vivian looks like an abstract painting. The photograph is intriguing in its alternating fields of rough texture and color, and simplified form. The periphery of the shadow filled with brightly lit grass appears washed out, like a pale green carpet. Contrastingly, the local color of the interior is soothingly darker, offering a figure made of lush, verdant hues. I find the gesture of the figure to be pensive and reflective; self-contained and psychologically protective of the delicate pink heart/flower. But I’m stuck by the uniqueness of the piece in your otherwise non-objective repertoire. Searching for aesthetic similarities or processes, it might be a reach to say I grasp a strong singularity in most pieces. There is also a formal concern for an overall articulated surface. But even if the intent was completely autonomous from the others, I’m glad you included it in your portfolio.
