Curator’s Comments:
Despite the decidedly negative title of this self portrait, I find it has some very positive, magnetic qualities. Conceding the print appears aesthetically incongruent with the light, ephemeral gestural drawings that dominate your portfolio- that may be the point. The overall grey tonality casts a faintly morose shadow on the face that partially cancels out the expression with a semi-opaque barrier. Alternately, I also feel the portrait could be washed out or eroded with time as in an early daguerreotype. The silvery quality of the grey tone could be contributing to this semblance. Assuming the piece is a monoprint, and the following image was generated from the same screen, I find the relationship between the distortions quite effective. Viewed sequentially with multiple frames would seem to enhance the sense of transformation or conversion, assuming this is a desired outcome.
