Curator’s Comments:
These densely articulated drawings in many ways appear to be the antithesis of your digital images; their subtly manipulated allover texture, and revelation of individual marks suggest a time consuming hand drawn practice, with minimal concern over color and movement. There is a quiet insistence; a visual stamina if you will, that is conveyed in their strong singularity, and build-up of unwavering forms. The austere numerical designations serving as titles layer the work with an innate primacy. “9” is particularly enjoyable as there is a slight suspension of visual weight, with a roughly spherical mass at the top moving down into a cone. Perhaps the energies that made the enigmatic object are moving down and accumulating outward to another formation. I’m also attracted to the piece labeled as 5 for its larger bulk of a shape, filling the majority of the positive space in the picture plane. It gives the vague visual sensation of pushing out towards the edges when viewed next to the works with more open background. Of course there’s an economic tendency in their approach, but I also view these drawings as icebergs, assuming we’re just seeing the surface of a much larger idea or force at work.
