Curator’s Comments:
I always enjoy seeing your new work on the site, and marvel at your productivity and the vibrancy in your studio practice. Silver Bullet intrigues me, as the title suggests a quick solution, while the sculptural forms unfold with smooth meandering lines. As with some of your other work on the site, this piece appears to have been constructed from found objects. While their former utilitarian function isn’t at all evident, I see the individual objects as visually complete- with a blue pincher shape, yellow circle, black piston, etc. They exist as whole entities in combination with others. The extreme projection of some of these objects in space provides a surprising visual dynamic, but not one that is off-kilter or compositionally erratic. The heavy stone base grounds the strong vertical projection, which nicely offsets the smaller elements. The primary colors, which I recognize as a signature aesthetic in your sculpture, inserts a primacy into the design of the work. The color spacing between more neutral hues offers visual rest. I see the red ball at the end of the curved metal rod as serving as a sort of period, or punctuation to a visual sentence. I believed you’ve experimented with actual kinetic sculptures as well as sculptures that share formal properties of flight or movement. The description puts Silver Bullet in the former category, but the construction conjures physical movement within the sculpture, even in this static image.
