Curator’s Comment:
The simplicity of shape and sensitivity of line really attracted me attention to this piece. Sitting, as the title implies, is quiet and still. The figure is fully conceived and articulated, despite the tenuous and delicate contoured edges. The black charcoal mass is beautifully coarse and smudgy, pulling the threadlike lines into the figure. The image is a little difficult to see, as it appears as though the drawing may have been photographed under glass. While the reflections are minimal, it makes me wonder about the plain white field in the negative space- the reflective imagery in the glass acts as a ghost, which evokes the lost and found quality of the drawing.
