Curator’s Comments:

Happy New Year!  Thank you for calling my attention to your new sculpture Sky Dancers, and asking me to comment.  While I still detect a very strong signature style within all of the work you’ve posted on the site, this new piece seems to take substantial visual risk in its asymmetric balance of visual (and actual) weight.  I don’t see this work as solidly grounded in a mid-century modern aesthetic as some of your other pieces, but it has an interesting geometric dynamic.  Maybe with the prompting of the title I’m encouraged to see two figures in the piece; one stabilizing the form at the base, and the other with open ‘arms’ stretched out at the end of the longest diagonal extended arm.  It also appears to be an increasingly economic sculpture, stripped away of extraneous elements in order to represent the suspension of weight into pending flight.  I feel the open air around the piece is especially important. The primary blue color unifies the piece visually for me, but still references mechanical rather than natural processes at work.  The base also seems less important in providing elemental contrast or formal anchoring.  What is the scale?  I’m wondering if it’s a maquette like some of the others for a significant / larger construction.
