Curator’s Comments:
This untitled piece reminds me of Oskar Kokoschka in its expressionistic merging of figure and ground. The theme of the entwined lovers is also reminiscent of the Austrian artist and poet. I enjoy the dissolution of the bodies as the figures’ faces and hands are more in focus, providing intimate gesture. The blending of an intense warm and cool color palette also nicely sets the subject up in a classic dichotomy. While I’ve enjoyed your more representational works on the site, this image makes good use of abstraction, and hierarchy of form. It occurs to me your paintings vacillate between iconic figures associated with spirituality and religion, pushing up against the corporeal world.
