Curator’s Comments:
Something to do with Circles is an interesting piece, by way of media manipulation as much as the colorful composition. I was surprised to see it identified as a soft pastel piece on canvas, initially believing I was viewing a digitally manipulated photograph. Rather than presenting as a traditional photorealistic painting, which disguises brushstrokes and approximates photographic flatness with local color, this work offers the viewer a slightly abstracted arrangement with high saturation, and the slight blurring of edges. The upper right corner furthers this dissolution of the still life, and breaks into a fully abstracted image. While the piece clearly depicts a painters palette, for me it also conjures the creative process itself, and evokes Georgia O’Keeffe’s often quoted remark about nothing being less real than realism.
