Curator’s Comments:
One Crack, Two Bam deftly, and perhaps somewhat inexplicably, combines riotous color choices and gestural marks with a more restrained painterly approach. I’m enamored with the way the painting plays against a traditional figure-ground relationship, and yet retains a sense of a figurative form on a tightly cropped diagonal. The linear brushstrokes break through softly modeled brushy passages of blue and pink, but they don’t define linear contours of the loosely depicted subject. It’s as if the painting relies on these dissonant associations for balance, and visual harmony. Even the picture plane challenges the viewers expectations of a square versus rectangular framework to contain the abstraction. For me, this piece is about a painter having a conversation with other painters.
