Curator’s Comment:
Space-baby (bronze edition) came up in a random search, and I was encouraged to see I had admired some of your other work a while back, and made comments about the different approaches in your intaglio prints and divided spherical sculptures. This piece appears to branch off in yet another aesthetic and formal direction- with the same sophistication of form and craft. Whereas the biomorphic spheres exhibit primacy in an economic design, I find Space-baby to be a humorous and ironic piece. The sculpture plays against the idea of suspended weight, but the supine orientation of the figure subverts the psychological and physical strength usually attributed to a subject cast in bronze. While the scale of the piece isn’t noted, I’m drawn to the “tiny” booties that would otherwise leave the subject nude. They are oddly decorative and are perhaps intended to show stylistic affectation against the smooth perfection of the cylindrical black base and bronzed skin. I would also note the wide open- and blue- eye revealed in the photo of the piece offers an unexpected expression. The booties and coloration of the eye for me interrupt the strong trajectory of the baby, and suggest he’s a reluctant cosmonaut. I do hope you continue to post new work on the site.
