Curator’s Comments:
Hello & thank you for alerting me to this new piece you’ve posted. I appreciate the dynamic equilibrium Wind Riders exhibits in its cantilevered distribution of weight. While the title, like many of your other sculptures, implies a plurality, I instead view it as a single entity. Perhaps this is because the multiple hovering rods protrude from a fairly dominant and weighty central column. The contrast between the white cylindrical form at the bottom is particularly interesting in that it’s interrupted by the black stone base. It visually creates an anchor and yet ultimately is detached from meeting the ground. The piece also appears to be kinetic, but of course it’s difficult for me to imagine how it moves from viewing a single still image. I also believe I have developed an admiration for your achromatic works, as they have a clean approach in the purity of the materials. While the primary colors activate the space in dynamic ways in several other pieces, the overall movement tends to slow down with these more economic aesthetic choices. I also like the uniformity in the vertical thrust of the linear elements. There is poetry in the simple sweeping lines.
