Curator’s Comments:
Mountain Fog in an intriguing piece in its contrast between decorative/compartmentalized design and open pictorial landscape. The unique handling of the media in the bottom of the painting asserts a decorative treatment of space and intricate entanglement of earthy and achromatic elements. The lighter striations, or bands of color flow through and around the organic forms, suggesting water and waves. I like that the single tree weaves up through this motif and meets the rising bands along the horizon with similar ribbon shapes in its foliage. As this activity unfolds below, the sky functions as visual rest. Then I was surprised when I looked back through your other pieces and remembered admiring the painting Feast. It has a decidedly different mood in its subject matter, palette, and narrative content. I’m glad I came across Mountain Fog again randomly, so I could appreciate its simpler composition and subtler complexities.
