Curator’s Comments:
Thick of It captured my attention recently, for its densely packed, almost pixeled space. I was intrigued to see the citation that this is an acrylic painting. Zooming into the canopy of similar trees presents a vaguely abstracted subject for the picture. Rapid color and value shifts create a sense of vibration or movement. The overlap of saturated hues over lighter daubs of color inexplicably remind me of color registration in printing. Representation is only revealed by the thin tree trunks peeking through breaks in the foliage. I’m also attracted to the choice of a square support, which further subverts the expectation of a horizontal picture plane for a landscape. Looking back through your other pieces posted to the site, I remember admiring and commenting on the multi-panel piece Recovery. Both works enjoy visual vacillation between micro/macrocosmic relationship, and present trees and plant matter in unexpected, and tactile ways. Both works were created a number of years ago, and I hope you consider posting new works to the site if you are still active.
