Curator’s Comments:
Shadows Of A Still Soul is a somewhat perplexing image to me, as the somber subject matter initially appears visually opposed to the light colors and delicate flowers in the landscape. But I like that these elements provide a relief from the large dark mass of the shadow figures in the painting. The wispy tendril-like lines radiating out from the shadows are interesting inclusions as well. I’m unsure if are intended to suggest the dark forms are dissipating into the brighter environment, or if they are only added formally as textural inclusions. I see these lines in several of your other works- some dealing with straight portraiture, so I imagine it’s likely the later. Of the larger portraits I’m most attracted to Diamond Lady. While I can see a Pop reference to Marilyn Monroe, the image starts to break down into solid black shapes and high chroma pigment. It appears to capture a tense erratic energy rather than a plain likeness.
