Curator’s Comment:
This is a striking image, but I’m not sure if I’m seeing a straight shot, or a splicing of two separate photographs. The building’s facade on the left seems much whiter and higher in contrast while the abutting brick wall on the right seems to move forward to meet the other at an extreme angle. The gradation of value and warm hues in the brick nicely offsets the natural light and white tonality in the first structure. The cooler violet and pale pint hues are especially sensitive, and nuanced. Formally, the tiny white diagonal of sky further echoes the repeating diagonals of shadow in the building. But I find it curious that this image seems to be somewhat unique in your portfolio of work on this site in its use of color, and extreme vantage point. I also find the second image which features the numerals 411 predominantly in the center quite interesting, as it breaks traditional rules about central focal points and the proportional rule of thirds. The large blocks of architecture and space create a well-built dynamic, as the reflective properties of the surfaces mirror the silvery value changes in the gray sky.
