Curator’s Comment:
I’ve always held admiration for plein air painters, as they’re part of a time honored tradition that seems to be much of what landscape painting can or should be about. That being said, it’s clear you’re able to insert yourself into this work, as the physical, painterly application of color and visible brushstrokes animate the space. Storm over cliff has attributes of vibrant, chunky paint, which lends solidity and great mass to the rock structures. The ochre and violet hues are set off by the gray-green trails and striations in the cliff face. I also like the deeper hues punctuating the cavernous break in the space beneath, which emphasizes the depth through the vertical orientation. All of your pieces on view here have a strong, resolute presence, and feeling of being in the setting. But this piece intimates an insignificant statue to the viewer because of the vantage point and scale of the topography. By accord, it imparts majesty to the natural landscape.
