Curator’s Comments:

Tree Farm (Prepping the Land) came up randomly on the site today, and so I was able to view the piece outside the context of the other farm-inspired works.  Without this context, the photograph becomes more of an abstraction, intimating color field paintings, and minimalist earthworks. The rough textural focus on the earth in the foreground beautifully balances the graphic banding of the stripes further out.  This alternate patterning holds the viewers interest within the field of a limited color palette.  The tiny sliver of green in the upper right corner allows another repeated pattern to enter into the larger rhythm of squares.  While this section looks to include wooden posts at regular intervals, there’s also the sensation the piece is breaking the larger planes of earth into smaller and smaller shapes. I see this image was posted several years ago, and I would love to see if you’ve continued with the theme.
