Curator’s Comments:

It was a pleasant surprise to come across your recent mixed media sculptural pieces entitled Supplement.  Labeled as objects d’art, they humorously rift on commercial packaging of the human psyche and intellect.  The small, walnut shaped brain revealed in the open can also takes on a darker tone when we imagine the visceral nature of the body in relation to consumption. While I see this work utilizing found objects as somewhat of a stylistic departure for you in terms of media, the painting with the bold graphic ‘Buy a Brain’ makes pictorial use of a similar pull top can.  Other open sardine cans used in the linocut You too and The Output contain even more obvious figurative contents.  The manipulation of the everyday, elevated to an enigmatic realm is threaded throughout the can imagery, and in your larger collection of paintings of corporeal forms isolated within industry or vaguely medical spaces. While I don’t see these human conditions are optimistic, they wryly reflect the manner in which the body is visually and conceptually shrunk in self-induced conformity.
