Curator’s Comments:
Rational Space #2 piqued my interest recently when it came up on the site. The red-orange center of this abstraction appears to glow from a light source from within, as surrounded by cooler, deeper hues. The thin ribbon like thin line flowing through the piece breaks up the decided verticality of the image, and slows down the viewers’ gaze. I was surprised to see the notation that this is an acrylic painting, as the transparencies of layered color simulate both oil glazing and scumbling techniques. The rough aqua hue layered over the smoother dark blues and violets also play with a sense of time, both in terms of visual movement, and with the suggestion of erosion of surface. Despite all of the richness and shifts in direction, this piece is perhaps one of the quieter images you have on the site. I remember admiring and commenting on other paintings that have more dramatically choreographed elements. The dexterity within your studio practice reveals a rich aesthetic sensibility, and I do hope you consider sharing new work to the site if you are able.
